Describe your business: Handyman Connection Saskatoon has been in operation for 20 years now and we can do everything from changing a tap to developing an entire basement. What makes us unique is that whether it’s a small or large job, we always send one of our highly qualified contractors to your home to make sure that every job is done right the first time.

What drives you to do what you do? What motivates you? Steve and I have seen poor customer service and workmanship repeatedly since taking over the business. You can hear the mistrust in many customer’s voices when you speak with them and we want them to know that our company actually does care and wants to develop a trusting relationship with them. When we see the relief and happiness on a customer’s face at the end of the job, that’s what keeps us going. Our motivation comes from our customers. It’s an amazing feeling when they call us back to complete other jobs for them because they have developed a relationship with us.

What has surprised you most when owning your own business? We were surprised to find out how many people in Saskatoon and the surrounding area did not know that our business existed. Steve and I also fully expected long hours and lots of ups and downs but I don’t think that you can ever fully prepare yourself!

What was it like when you first started? Steve and I purchased the existing business in July of 2018 and it was complete chaos to be perfectly honest! Although we still both work 7 days a week (once in a while we will take a day off!) it has definitely been worth it.

What is something people don’t know about your business? Most people don’t realize we do complete renovations because the name “Handyman” implies we do only a small “handyman” job. This is just one of the aspects of our business that we are beginning to promote by using our new slogan “Not just small, we do it all” to get the message out.

What would your customers say they love most about doing business with you? Most of the comments that we hear are about great customer service, workmanship, and the efficiency of the job from start to finish. Our customers also love the fact that they receive email notifications confirming the date, time and who their contractor will be. A picture of the contractor is included in this notification so that they know who will be showing up at their door.

What are some odd requests you’ve had from clients? One time we had a lady who asked us to cut her grass because she thought that was what a “handyman” does. We politely declined and explained that we have contractors with over 15 years of experience each who do home repairs & renovations. We referred her to another local business who could help her out and she was happy for the referral.

How do you motivate and encourage yourself? Steve and I remind ourselves that we have been given the opportunity to own our own business and we don’t take that for granted. We havea great team that we work with and they all have a great sense of humor that keeps us going on a bad day.

Where do you see your business in the next years? Our vision is to have grown the business to the level that we are a regular and trusted household name to the residents of Saskatoon and surrounding areas.

What are your greatest challenges? One of the greatest challenges that we continually have is to find new team members (contractors) with our same core values and who understand the level to which we want our business to grow and to want to go through this journey with us. The other challenge that we face is customers who want a “cheap and quick” fix. We will politely decline these jobs because if we do a job, it will be done the proper way….to us there is no other way of doing it.

What is something most people don’t know about you? Steve and I are 50/50 partners in our business but we also grew up in the same small town in Saskatchewan so we’ve known each other for 37 years. We only started dating 6 1/2 years ago and are now engaged.

What do you love most about your town/city? Saskatoon has big city amenities with a small-town vibe.

Why do you think it is important for people to support local? People need to keep in mind how costly it is to run a smaller business so that’s why our suppliers are all local companies (unless weabsolutely cannot get a product that we need from here). We also refer customers to other local companies if the project that needs to be done is a specialty one.

What are your favorite restaurants? Cactus Club, The Granary, Harden & Huyse, and Montana’s.

What are your favorite things to do locally? It’s been difficult to find time to do recreational things since we bought the business but we enjoy bike riding, and bowling and we’ve even tried axe throwing once (it was a lot of fun!)
