What drives you to do what you do? What motivates you? Going outside of every possible box! Having fun while serving others. Increasing my income while teaching my daughter to kick some ass!

What has surprised you most when owning your own business? The positive feedback has been astounding. So many people are SO grateful for this space.

What was it like when you first started? Exhausting! Being a mom, working a day job, and running the business evening and weekends. Responding to hundreds of inquiries those first few weeks alone, while establishing new systems and partnerships and trying to figure out dreaded bookkeeping details. I am so grateful for the ongoing support from my team! My shop manager Candace has the same drive to see Smash succeed as I do, and I am so thankful for her constant hustle and leadership.

What is something people don’t know about your business? There is so much more that goes into it than meets the eye! Electronics for example – we source them end-of-life, rip them apart to remove everything from ink to heavy metals and capacitors. Then reassemble for smashing before the Electronic Recycle Association makes their weekly pick up.

What would your customers say they love most about doing business with you? Our friendly service and the feeling they get after a smash! You just have to try it to fully understand.

What are some odd requests you’ve had from customers/clients? We have had a few guests come with pictures of their ex. Either we frame it or they tape it onto items within the smash room. We also have had some interesting musical requests, like that of a specific opera singer.

How do you motivate and encourage each other? Yourself? or Staff? We have a very positive work environment where the crew essentially is given the freedom to do what they want when there aren’t rooms to clean and reset. A wide variety of tasks and unique guest experiences keep us entertained each evening at the shop. We also enjoy doing things outside of work together, like patio snacks and drinks!

Where do you see your business in the next years? Smash Therapy is a scalable business, with plans to have more locations within Canada in the coming years!

What are your greatest challenges? Since we have established such great partnerships, the greatest challenge lies within the warehouse – keeping up with maintenance and repairs as our guests, unintentionally and over time, break our stuff!
Advertising while on a strict budget has also been challenging, as we feel that so many people are still unaware of our existence in Saskatoon’s north end after 8 months in business.

What is something most people don’t know about you? We love serving groups the most! A booking for six or more grants you access to the entire warehouse, control of the music, and the lounge to unwind and grab a snack and bottled water on the house.

What do you love most about your town/city? There is something for everyone in Saskatoon! I love the multiculturalism, especially when displayed through FOOD!

Why do you think it is important for people to support local? Everything from the wealth, wellness, and uniqueness of a community depend heavily on small local business.

What are your favorite restaurants? Las Palapas, Asian Hut, Keos, Prarie Sun Brewery and Pink Cadillacs is my favorite place to have mother-daughter dates with my sweet 9 year old, Jersey, who loves greeting and serving customers at Smash Therapy

What are your favorite things to do locally? Visits to Wanukskewin Heritage Park, walks at River Landing, Bike with my daughter in our Kensington neighborhood, love the sun at Poplar Bluffs conservation area.
