What do Charlee and Moose, Floral arrangements, and great customer service have in common? These are all things you will find at Bill’s House of Flowers. I recently sat down with Jana Ellis to learn more about her company. When I entered the store I was engulfed in the wonderful flower shop aromas and greeted by Moose the Great Pyrenees. I was in love with this shop already! TUF Local is happy to introduce you to Bill’s House of Flowers

Describe your business: Bill’s House of Flowers is a retail flower shop that was established in 1962 by my (Jana’s) father, Bill Ellis. We offer beautiful floral designs and a wonderful selection of plants and living arrangements. Our staff have a love of all growing things and strive to ensure the customer has an exceptional flower experience.
What drives you to do what you do? What motivates you? My Staff! To be able to provide a living for 7 full-time and 4 part-time employees. Seeing them grow and seeing what they come up with and create for the company.
What has surprised you most when owning your own business? I find it interesting that when people find out you own a business they assume you are wealthy.
What is something people don’t know about your business? They probably do not know that we have been here for 60 years! Also, I do not think they understand how physical the work can be. We are on our feet all day, processing flowers, lifting buckets, and cleaning. Such a glamorous job!!
What would your customers say they love most about doing business with you? US! the people. We are very honest, practical, and real. We ensure our clients purchase the arrangement that makes sense for the space they are using it in. For example; we will be honest if we feel the arrangement that they are wanting to buy is too big for the location.
How do you motivate and encourage your Staff? I try and give my staff the freedom to be creative. I try not to micro-manage and allow them to do what they do best.
Where do you see your business in the next years? Hopefully without me in it! 🙂 I would like to step away and retire.
What are your greatest challenges? Currently, securing product. We are seeing multiple supply chain issues that are negatively impacting our business. Flowers, vases, etc.
What do you love most about your town/city? That we are a small city. It’s easy to get around. We have a small city heart.
Why do you think it is important for people to support local? ….cause they are mom and pop shops. We are grassroots. We are here. When you call us on the phone, we answer and want to help.
What are your favorite restaurants? ….Primal, Odd Couple, Leydas, Hearth, Odla, Rook and Raven, Yard and Flagon. I love our local restaurants
What are your favorite things to do locally? ….I love to walk and take in the outdoors.
